Salary vs income: what is the difference?

Why a converted pay amount is not automatically the same concept as WID national income.

What a salary converter does

Salary commonly refers to employment pay. A converter changes its time unit: hourly to annual, annual to monthly, and so on. It does not add business earnings, investment income or other categories, and it does not deduct taxes. A mathematically correct conversion can still be the wrong concept for a particular statistical comparison.

What the distribution measures

RankMyIncome uses WID pre-tax national income for equal-split adults aged 20+. That is broader than employee salary. Equal-split conventions also differ from assigning every amount entirely to the person named on a payslip. The site preserves this definition rather than relabeling the distribution as employee wage data.

A reproducible conversion

At 25 currency units per hour, 40 paid hours a week and 52 paid weeks, annual gross pay is 52,000. At 48 paid weeks it is 48,000. Neither figure is take-home pay. Paid leave, unpaid time, bonuses and overtime need consistent assumptions. Use paid or worked weeks appropriate to the amount being annualized.

Interpreting the result

If salary is the only known amount, the result shows where that amount lies in the adult income distribution. It does not verify a salary percentile among employees of the same age, occupation or city. Convert pay periods and compare salary and income percentiles before interpreting the rank.
