Data Sources

RankMyIncome uses an imported World Inequality Database (WID.world) snapshot to display income thresholds and calculate approximate income ranks. The published dataset covers 208 countries and territories; the world distribution uses 2024.

Source series and population

National thresholds use tptinc992j / tptincj992: pre-tax national income, equal-split adults aged 20 and over. Couples' income is split equally between adults under this definition. These are not employee-only salary statistics, household income or wealth.

Purchasing-power conversion uses xlcusp999i / xlcuspi999. The worldwide reference is WO-PPP, expressed in USD PPP. PPP is a purchasing-power comparison unit, not a market exchange rate for transferring money.

Trace a displayed number

  1. Open a country data page and note its currency, distribution year and PPP year.
  2. Use the WID data portal and codes dictionary to identify the matching series and percentile.
  3. Compare against the snapshot used by this site. WID can revise historical data, so a newer download may differ.

What RankMyIncome derives

Median and top 10%, 5% and 1% entry boundaries correspond to p50, p90, p95 and p99. Monthly equivalents divide annual values by 12. Global comparisons divide local income by the recorded PPP factor and compare it to the world curve. Country rankings compare purchasing-power values. The calculator uses interpolation between thresholds and extrapolation outside the observed range; see the calculation methodology.

The arithmetic mean is not supplied by this imported threshold dataset. We do not label the median as an average salary. Top-group thresholds are entry boundaries, not the average income earned within those groups.

Years and limitations

2024 is the world reference year, not a claim that all source series were collected at the same time. Each country's distribution and PPP year are stored separately and displayed on its page. Estimates combine administrative data, surveys and national accounts and are subject to revision. City, occupation and household breakdowns are not available here.

Attribution, independence and reuse
